Listening to the news the past few days or more importantly listening to dumb people’s responses to the news has gotten my panties in a wad. So since I have this platform to rant on, I’m gonna use it! The whole food stamp challenge is stupid- and the way people are running with it is even worse. Gwyneth Paltrow did buy some weird things, but I don’t care that she bought 7 limes…maybe she seasoned the beans with it or used them to cook with something she already had. Nobody said that you have to eat strictly what you bought in that week. As for the people babbling on about how you can’t eat nutritiously on assistance…well boohoo. First I’ll preface with saying that I’ve never been on food stamps- but I’ve known people that have been and each of those individuals (especially the ones with kids) have gotten more money than they needed to feed their family if they were smart about it. $29 a week for EACH person is not living large, but it’s not ridiculous either. If the government gave out a monetary amount that was more than enough and didn’t remind those that are using it that at some point they should supplement with another form of income…more people would just sit idle and soak up the life of luxury without any effort. A great deal of people using this program are using it in addition to a minimum wage job that just doesn’t do the trick, so it’s not only the $29 that is contributing to the shopping trip..and on top of that there are multiple avenues to apply for assistance and a lot of people get a little from a lot of places. So basically I’m saying calm down. I can easily get by a few weeks in a row spending under $30 at the grocery store without even trying- last week I spend $17 and I shop once a week. To answer your question, yes there are weeks where I spend $50 but the point is I’m not trying to spend $29 and I still don’t go over many times without buying crap food. So if you’re on food stamps and complaining, I hear you. It sucks, you’re in a tough position and I’m sorry but you’re getting help so I’d be a little more gracious about it. That being said I think the majority of the people throwing a fit aren’t even on assistance, they just like to complain.
